The Peaceful Warriors healing workshop will be offering herbal bundle-making, drumming, and healing circle for men of color. The intention of this workshop is to allow our brothers to experience a spiritual reconnection through plants, sound, and brotherly support.
About the Facilitators
Jorge DePaz
Jorge DePaz is Bay Area community service provider who has worked in various capacities such as Mental Health Educator, Public Education Liaison, and now in the Healthcare industry. Throughout his career, DePaz has introduced the power of community building through the sharing of music. No musical skills are needed!! These workshops are for community members of all ages. DePaz has always been a fan of percussion sounds throughout all genres of music but was introduced to many more sounds that can be made with the very simple playing of shakers, chimes, flutes and tambourines, and other handheld instruments. The goal of the workshop is to introduce everyone to the joyful sounds of the community harmonizing as one and to hopefully plant a seed of interest in instrument playing in all attendees.
Luis Marroquin
Luis Marroquin is a facilitator for the Peaceful Warriors Men's Healing Circle. He has been facilitating men's circles for 4 years in East Oakland at Amor Eterno Arte, a Tattoo shop and community space. Luis has also co-facilitated men circles with his mentor and community elder Maestra Teresa Iñiguez-Flores, a curandera based out of San Francisco.
Luis does not consider himself a healer, in the sense that he can heal anyone, as he knows he can only support those who choose to heal themselves. Luis shares his personal healing journey and experiences that are rooted in spirituality to support other men dealing with trauma. He does this by creating a sacred and safe space that allows men to connect to their emotions, identity, and spirit. He believes that healing is a lifelong process of reclaiming self-identity of what a “man” should be, not the toxic masculinity that has been imposed on men through social and cultural constructs. Healing and self-awareness is a process that requires patience, courage, support, and a lot of self-love.
salvador cortez jr.
Salvador Cortez Jr. is a 2spirit otomi/Chichimeca and Purépecha artist. Born and raised on occupied Ohlone lands (so-called Oakland). Sal grew up observing and participating in prayer with his elder matriarchs and family and was creatively nurtured by his parents and the Fruitvale community of the 80s and 90s. Sal is currently a Medicine tattooer and co-owner of Amor Eterno Arte in Oakland as well as a co-facilitator of Peaceful Warriors Oakland. Having lived the majority of his life span living in the male privilege of a large Mexican catholic family and toxic masculinity, those behaviors became a normal part of functioning. At an early age, Sal observed the power of violence and violent communication/intimidation in our society and used it for the majority of his life. To combat grounding in violence and to support a change in behavior, Sal is committed daily to healing with prayer and plant medicine. Specifically bundle-making with lavender, to process difficult emotions and to dismantle imposter syndrome and self-hatred. Sal believes that everything we do is an opportunity to make medicine, and build a spiritual armor of gratitude to help us face every day .
