Increasing Access to Maternal Health Care in Sub-Saharan Africa

Every year in sub-Saharan Africa, almost 200,000 women die from complications related to pregnancy and childbirth. One in 39 women in sub-Saharan Africa is at risk of dying of pregnancy related complications, compared to one in 4,300 in developed countries. Sometimes we forget how truly lucky we are. In this giving time of year, let's give thanks and celebrate the incredible work that others do to ensure global access to quality health care. 

An article by Capital News outlines the incredible work of Amref Health Africa, a nonprofit that is working on an initiative and training 8,000 midwives across eight African countries to provide services for those in need in Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Ethiopia, South Suden, Senegal, Malawi and Zambia. The initiative, Stand Up for African Mothers, aims to mobilize citizens worldwide to ensure that mothers get basic medical care during pregnancy and childbirth. The article also includes a quote outlining the incredible impact of midwives, claiming "midwives save lives. It is estimated that a midwife can assist at least 500 women during childbirth per year and deliver a minimum of 100 babies." That's incredible!
