Prenatal Yoga

Pregnancy is a beautiful and stressful journey. Many women deal with bleeding, nausea, vomiting, headaches, abdominal pain and finally hard labor. In a study by the Department of Obstetric Gynecological Nursing and Midwifery, two groups were followed. One group did not attend yoga classes and the other did other six 1-hour yoga classes every two weeks in the final trimester. The results were incredible! Women who practiced yoga had an easier labor.

Prenatal Yoga Center states, “Yoga involves synchronization of breathing awareness and muscle relaxation, which decreases tension and the perception of pain”, this eventually helps women prepare for labor physically and mentally. Women who practice prenatal yoga also can shorten their labor as minimum as 2.5 hours. By getting into a "yoga zone", women can let loose with contractions, with the similar effect you would do a yoga pose.

Yoga has also proven to circulate endorphins and serotonin in the body. When this happens pain is more tolerable and you receive a "natural high". Many women who proceed with yoga regularly reach a new level of consciousness and go into labor prepare mentally.  Finally, yoga lowers the amount of pain by alternating the parasympathetic nervous system, reducing irritating feelings in the body.

Renée Wilson has over 10 years of experience with yoga and now provides prenatal classes at Community Well! She believes that prenatal yoga, "eases aches and pains commonly found during pregnancy, promotes mind, body, spirit connection with your baby, builds strength and breathe awareness and is an opportunity to practice and be in community with other pregnant women."
